Genetic engineering in humans
Last semester in psychology class we viewed a brief 5-7 minute video
discussing this topic that told the story of a young couple who lost their baby
girl due to a genetic disease. The little girl lived to be 3 years old and her
parents couldn’t bare to have another child knowing that there would be a
possibility of their next child suffering too. They wanted more children but
were too afraid. Then some scientists reached out to them and informed them
about testing they were doing to supposedly remove dangerous genes from the
mother’s body that could cause disease in her offspring. There was no guarantee
that this procedure would work though. But, the couple decided to go through
with it anyway. She became pregnant and her next child was totally healthy so it
did end up working. On the other hand the video also discussed parents who
wanted to undergo these procedures in order for their child to look a certain
way. Which I thought was extremely selfish and unreasonable. You shouldn’t try
to build a child, it doesn’t work like that. You should love your child and feel
they are the most beautiful person in the world no matter how they look but
that’s just my opinion. The video was not long so it was not very detailed but
we were required to write our opinions on how we felt about the topic. I had
conflicting opinions because yes I would do anything to try and make sure my
child is healthy but I kind of felt like that should be left in God’s hands. The
topic got me really engaged and I was interested in finding out more and
researching other couples who may have done the same things.
In other words they call this “designer babies”. In this research paper I
would like to find out if there are any side effects to this method, both good
and bad. Has anyone gone through this method and it failed to work. I’m very
interested in knowing and doing research such as this got me interested in
actually studying psychology. I had never heard of anything like this before. I
know that I can be successful but what does it take for this service to actually
be available in hospitals and things like that. Will there be a line drawn
between disease prevention and physical appearance uses of this procedure. How
much would genetic engineering cost? Would it only be available to those who are
wealthier? There is just so much I feel I can learn about this topic and that is
why I chose it. Maybe by the end of my research I will have a different opinion
but as of now I feel there are good and bad aspects of genetic engineering
because we are humans not robots. Is it okay to just take out genes that may be
considered bad, everything inside of us makes us who we are and God makes no
mistakes. Everything is there for a reason but then again I also feel that if
God didn’t want the procedure to work the child would have still been born
diseased.
